Default Cough and Splutter - Rover 75 Diesel

Good Afternoon!

Let me set the scene... Just had the clutch and flywheel done on the car by the father in law (mobile mechanic) and the car is running nice and fine in all gears as expected.

Yesterday, decided to go to north wales, but go the old way via chester etc...

Anyways, 40 miles away from home the car developed a little problem, it would cough like it was about to pack up, and then a spit some black smoke out of the back. So, nursed the car home at around 55 mph (on the motorway) and it was doing it now and again.

Took it to my father in law, plugged his machine into it, but could not see any codes coming back.

He suspects that it could be an injector problem, obviously I will bat it out to people on here who have experience with these cars.

Obviously, the first quick check is the plenum.

As they were disturbed to change the clutch, I would check the seating of hoses and electrical connectors on the under bonnet pump and fuel filter. How old is the filter; moving it may have distributed old debris that is now clogging.

If you can get to a T4, this can tell you whether or not the MAF is working OK and if the injectors are balance and in spec.

A quick check for the MAF is to simply disconnect it electrically and see if the car improves. If it does then your MAF needs replacement.

The other thing to check is that the intercooler hose seals and pipe are all still properly connected and not distorting.

As you were in North Wales, calling into see Jules for a quick T4 check would have been a good idea. innit..

That it would... I was more concerned about getting the family home really, but I shall contact Jules and see how much it would be to take a look.

Well, it looks like it was the MAF at fault, unplugged it and drives really nicely now so happy with that.

Replacement MAF needed then

Many thanks for your help and suggestions!

MAFs are a pain on our cars - either leave it unplugged or fit a genuine Bosch - there's no reliable middle ground (yet - I'm working on it!)
