Default ouch, night in hospital update

Been back to hospital today. on another course of antibiotics as index finger is pink and sore. must not bend middle finger as I risk tearing skin graft and braking the repair to the tendons that were cut or nicked.
new cast and dressings put on. staff were gentle and reassuring. I was very apprehensive about what I would be told today. Apart from losing from the top joint of index finger and probably having a "dent" in the middle finger I should regain full movement.
I had expected to return to work next week but it could be 8 weeks before I can drive and they have been given sick note for a staggering 2 months.
If my hand takes this long to mend the next 2 months will be difficult.

Doctor showed me a picture of a hand that had been severed by a chain saw. The cut was across the back of the hand. they managed to restore the hand and the chap as some movement but probably wont get full control but his time as a tree surgeon they said is over so I got away lightly

Good to hear you are "mending" Ian. These injuries are going to take a while - frustrating I am sure.

My son (a Thatcher) fell off a roof when he was an apprentice and smashed his Calcanium Bone (heel bone) into several pieces. He was in Odstock for about ten days whilst they assessed him and they then moved him to Stn Gen because there was a Royal Navy Surgeon there that had huge experience of such injuries because parashootists can suffer the same if they land badly.

My son was ultimately scored 99% joint articulation which is fantastic and apart from having metal plates in his foot that feel "odd" in cold weather - he is fully recovered.

Recovery is a bit slow and can be "wobbly" but each week sees a distinct improvement.

Can you still lift a pint glass? If not - it is acceptable to have two half pints.

Not good about how long it could take to heal, but the main thing is that you still have your hand and it should work as before. It could have been worse.

But hopefully it won't take as long as they've signed you off for.

Default Serious..

I used to tell lots of Irish Jokes, one night I was in the middle of a Paddy and Mick joke when a very big Irishman got up, he shouted at me and pulled out a Razor and started to threaten me with it...I reckon it could have been serious if he'd found somewhere to plug it in....

Default A Picture or two

I smashed part of my left hand in 1988, it took until 1999 to get it mended, sometimes with two operations each year, seven bone grafts and many months of non use but, the Surgeon was the best, after one op, I had two painkillers in the following days. These pictures show a failed one after my tendons pulled the bone together and crushed the graft, this one was 1995. There's a visible hole in my wrist where the graft was taken from. The second pictures are before the first if you look at the length of the bone before and after.
