servicing the rear caliper
I think I have a binding brake but I don't know which one, cold or hot the wheels all spin almost the same so I'm taking a chance its the rear offside.
I could do with some advice please on servicing the piston side of the rear calliper. There looks to be a rubber gator, longer then item 7 here https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID001572 Is 7 and this gator the same thing? If different, can you give me a link to the gator lease? Does the gator fit into a grove in the piston? Does the piston push back or wind back? thank you macafee2 |

Hi macafee2,
The piston is pushed back in and there is a groove for the gator on the piston. I would just buy a kit of eBay, they give you all you need for a full refurb and only cost about £7. Thing to watch out for is the bleed screw, they can easily break off, I sprayed plenty of plus gas into the threads and then heated it and melted candle wax into the threads. Worked really well. You could be lucky if it has been bled recently. I gave the piston a good clean and a light sanding, no issues with the brakes since doing it. I also gave the callipers a good clean and painted them with hammerite. Hope it all goes well. |

thank you. I found this kit but have you a link to a different one? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-REAR-BRAKE-CALIPER-REPAIR-SEAL-KIT-FITS-ROVER-75-and-75-TOURER-1999-2005/283003105760?fits=Car+Make%3ARover%7CModel%3A75&ep id=4010917373&hash=item41e44cb1e0:g:9KEAAOSwZrdbL7 Yh I think I also saw on YouTube about melting candle wax into the thread. Strange thing to do macafee2 |

It is strange how the wax works but it's best to do all you can yo give yourself a chance of getting a clean removal of the bleed screw.
This is a link for the type of kit I used https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331701821315 I also bought replacement bleed screws. |

On the rears, the gaitor if I recall went over the piston into the groove, then pulled inside out, and fitted to the caliper (or the other way around lol - the video above will show it). When pushing the piston back in, it all fitted into place. You need three hands, and another three that are not covered in grease lol, but it makes sense when you see the video. Bleed nipples Seals kit Refurb kit the drawing on the Rimmers site from the OP looks like the dust cover for the front caliper. It is just a drawing/diagram after all. the rubber grease wasnt wiped off in this image When I rebuilt them, prior to fitting, I placed quite a thick block of wood between the two holes where the spring clip attaches, and the piston, then fired a little compressed air through to active the piston to make sure everything was seated correctly. The block of wood should only allow the piston to move outwards by about 10mm, and only use a little air. My theory was that it would show up any potential leaks of air, or ill fitting seals.

And If as usual, there was any water in the airline, you put water into the Cali per which ends up in contact with the piston. Water and metal? We all know what that means. Might be better to use a bicycle pump if you think that a blast of air is required.

never considered that to be honest, however the amount of grease and brake fluid within the chamber I doubt any water from the airline (for the 1 second blast) would be significant, and in my case it should be flushed out anyway - it is a valid point though.

seal kit is a good link, thank you as it has the gator. Could you check the refurb kit link, I cant get it to work. The two sliding pins were very dry so have used red rubber grease on those. Unfortunately I did not come back to this thread and see the seal kit link and as I was unsure, I have cleaned the two halves of the calliper where the pad hang, cleaned and greased the slider pins. The wheel does spin a little easier. I will give the car a test drive and see what happens but I have learnt a bit more, thank you clf macafee2 |

other components are HERE Sometimes cleaning the pins and greasing them will cure a sticking caliper. Before I refurbished my calipers, I polished the pins with fine wet and dry and polished them too lol, prior to refitting with rubber grease. But if it is sticking, it could be time to give them a bit of an overhaul.
