Default Dash air vent removal

Rover 75 CDTI has very annoying buzz from under the top of the dash in tune with the engine!! If I put a little pressure lifting the black dash cover away from the walnut facia the buzz stops but when I let go it starts again.
Have tried pushing some material between the facia and the padded top but same buzz continues. I'm assuming it may be a loose wire/cable and thinking I need to get into the facia by removing the plastic air vents but, so far have not worked out how to do that. I assumed they would pull out but that just snapped one of the louvres. Not happy about levering them out with a screwdriver until I have confirmation that's the way to go.
Grateful for advice. Thanks
