Urgent help please: automatic gearbox
Car has been fine, no problems. Drove in to work this morning and it was fine, come to drive home tonight and the auto box is slipping. As soon as I accelerate the revs go right up - its not engaging gear. If I drive slowly, it does change up and down, but its jerky. Then EP came on the dash and it was stuck in one gear. Pulled over turned it off, back on, EP goes out, but it still slips with jerky changes.
Had the auto oil changed at at Rover dealer about 6 months ago, but its been fine. ANY ideas??? tnx Nick

Check the oil level, the filler may have worked loose, or they may have left the washer off...

I believe there is a auto fluid cooler (there is on a V6). The pipes from the auto box to the cooler have been known to come adrift loosing fluid and giving the symptoms you describe.

Auto box
Remove the undertray to see if it is soaked in auto fluid. If you do check the fluid level the plug is ON THE BOTTOM. Do not undo anything on the sides of the box. There are known problems with the various solonoid/valves, some of which can be replaced without removing the box. There is also a known problem with a connection which comes adrift on the multi plug near the battery.

I had big probs with EP error, turned out to be a badly corroded glow plug relay which is housed in the plenum chamber beside the ecu (little white box inside the ecu enclosure).

Check the fluid cooler, there is rust on its mountings, but all pipes are ok.
Taken undertray off and no oil. Gearbox is as clean as a whistle. Checked fault codes - none stored. Checked auto box level - over full. Removed fill/level plug with engine running and about a pint and a half came out. Left the battery disconnected for half an hour to reset everything (after checking there were no faults stored). Could an over-full box cause that sort of problem???? Checked passenger side plenums (top and under) and both clean, no water near the ECU. No idea where the drivers side lower plenum is. The top one is clear. I do have a misting problem at the moment - over the last couple of weeks. As soon as I start the car, the windows mist up, but ecu chamber is dry and so is the pollen filter. I'll check passenger well inside where the auto ecu is (if I can find it) Nick

Yes - too much ATF in the box is just as bad as too little.
You can tell the state of the ATF by the smell of it. If it smells of toasted bread - then it's well over due for changing. As you cant get all of the old ATF out, you may need to change it again after a few days. |

A pint and a half overfull seems extremely excessive if it was filled by a specialist? You say the 'fill/level' plug which is not correct, they are two separate items so I hope you used the correct procedure when checking the level. Overfilling could cause the fluid to bubble but it has been in there for six months. the drivers side drain pipe for the Plenum can be viewed from underneath where you can open the end to see if water comes out but do not be directly underneath it when you try. If the passenger side is clear
then there cannot be a lot of water in the drivers side. |

have a look at the glow plug relay, not obvious without opening the plastic housing. see pic of mine
