Default BMW fully electric Mini to be built at Cowley

Some good news, BMW will build a fully electric version of the Mini in the UK, despite previously warning it would make the car overseas because of the uncertainty created by Britain’s departure from the EU.

Production is scheduled to start in 2019.

The electric motors and batteries for the electric Mini will be made at BMW plants in Germany and shipped to the UK.

I was just reading about that this morning, http://insideevs.com/mini-confirms-b...ee-door-hatch/
They're going the same way as Volvo & electrifying their entire range of models.

It's fantastic news for Oxford, PSA (owners of the GM Bolt / Ampera) should make either Ellsmere port or Luton a BEV factory to guarantee their future as sales are rising month on month for EV/PHEV's all across Europe.

It guarantees the future of at least 4,000+ jobs at Cowley, well done the UK.

I wonder how powerful the batteries will be, what will the range be on just one charge?

From what I've been reading it will have a charge of approx 120 mile which is not great for 2019 when it will be making it's debut.

It will have to compete with cars that will have around 200 miles of range, Some spy shots of the next generation nissan leaf which is being made in Sunderland amongst other worldwide plants is said to have 165 miles of range which is due out in Sept 2017

The Mini-E looks great though.

It's going to be like being cast back into the mid 20th century or worse. No more will you be able to just jump in/on your chosen mode of transport - safe in the knowledge that you can quickly refuel at many places within whatever tank range you might have, whether that's 50 miles or 600 miles. No more drives from Lands End to John'O'Groats without several refueling stops measured in hours rather than minutes.. Electric is just about the most complex fuel to deliver (and most incovenient) that could have been chosen for the next generation of transport. Whatever happened to LPG, synthetic liquid and gas fuels and Hydrogen fuel cells?? All shifting to electric is going to do is to re-locate the pollution problem (and increase it with battery waste).

</EndRant>

The reason is to make us rely on public transport, it will be just like in the modern movie's.

Thankfully they've since said it will be an electrified version of the current mini, not that monstrosity! They've also said it'll have a range in excess of 200 miles and I'm also guessing it'll have fast DC charging.
