Erm, the Doctor is not at Liberty to discuss a patient with a third party, it's a no no.

Can’t discuss, but can listen to concerns. I had to do this with a close relative recently, nothing to do with driving, but another concern.

Next time he goes out in the car inform the police you may think he is cause for concern on the road.

Not quite. Doctor has a duty of care to everyone and if a patient is a potential danger then the gp can certainly listen to the concerns of the family and between them decide the best course of action.

Rev
I'd use that as a last last, no other route possible option, I could see it doing irreparable damage to the relationship with the father.

It's very hard. I wonder if any of us would be any better? Being told you can't drive is a real kick in the teeth and can make men in particular feel emasculated.
We finally got my old man's keys off him when he reversed out the drive and buried the boot in the scenery on the opposite side of the road. It was just lucky he didn't hit anyone.

This is why there should be compulsory retests for everyone every 10 years and then maybe more often when you turn 70. My Father has just turned 70 and is still a very good driver however would not object to being checked again.
It's a nonsense that you can pass your test at 17 and we then assume you'll remain a good driver until the end.

Back to the OP's post we had this with my Grandfather, the short answer is there's no easy solution but thankfully after scrapping the corners of the car on bollards he realised he wasn't still the driver used to be and stopped himself.

Yes, you are probably right there, it wasn't my experience with a neighbor suffering from Schizophrenia, the old boy would stop taking medication, and became a real problem. I rang his doctor to be told they could do nothing, then I tracked down his social worker, told him he needed help, couldn't walk properly and family all lived abroad..he would go in to a recluse state, I called the police and they said, he was at home just never went out much.

One day, the police showed up to find he had died in bed, they the police insinuated I was a bad neighbor and should have done something to help..made me feel bad for weeks.

There always have to be someone to blame nowadays doesn't there. Why can't people just accept that sh*t happens.

Steve he wouldn't find out it would be classed as a routine stop, they would offer an on the spot eye test, and if a fail, they would then take him off the road. Steve you would never forgive yourself if he did actually harm some body, difficult call?
