Default Tax discs

7 years ago today I took my tax discs out for the last time!

Must say it's a pain not being able to keep tax when you buy a car however being able to tax on a monthly DD is much better and saves the hassle of having to remember to tax every year.

The windscreen still seems a little bare however can't say I miss the old way.

I miss the old tax discs, still have a few in the gold diesel from when they were in service.

But yes, monthly dd is a breeze.

This move was generated by the prospect of saving a mere £7 million per annum by the DVLA. Apparently it has cost many times that. Not surprised - as I thought unless you either taxed the car or declared SORN, a penalty notice would automatically arrive through the post, but no. An out-of-date tax disc or none at all on view was badged as a sign of shame or at least embarrassment, and must have encouraged many to re tax.

I regularly have cars left outside my house, usually badly parked, so, yes, I do run a tax/MOT check on the Government site. Until recently, I had never reported any, but decided to report one, which the website encourages. Felt guilty ever since, but now 6 weeks on it still runs around untaxed. I no longer feel guilty, since it seems nobody follows it up. Even had police cars passing regularly, so why does it not trigger an alert on their kit? I feel a mug for taxing all mine when on the road, despite sometimes for just one show, as minimum is for a month. Put it (cost neutral) on fuel so those who use the roads the most pay the most. It would only be a few pence per litre, and nobody could avoid it.

Rant over!

The system is far more convenient now, and saves the hassle of waiting for a disc of paper to come through the post or queuing at the Post Office to get it. However, there's still one aspect that ticks me off (think of a stronger word to replace 'ticks') and that's the fact that tax is still charged for complete calendar months - e.g. if you tax a car on the 20th of a month you have to pay for the whole of that month.

Now that everything's digital there is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for this, and the system should be changed so that you can tax your car from any specific date in a month to run monthly (or yearly) from that date.

Just another way to rip off motorists.

Agree with that, the system should have changed when physical discs disappeared.
