Default Michael Caine's mementos

The news today that Caine is selling some of his mementos, including a poster of the film Zulu his first starring role, gives me an excuse to relay a story from our village, North Curry in Somerset. John Chard VC, the senior officer, was played by Stanley Baker, but was portrayed clean shaven.

Chard's aunt, Mrs Gwerfyl Barrett, lived in The Big House in our village but when she first saw the film shouted at the TV "Don't they know he wore a moustache!" and promptly switched the set off.
She was a renowned driver well into her eighties though kept a chauffeur to do the reversing: she never quite mastered that.
Funnily enough his grave in the next village is regularly visited by today's Zulus, who seem to regard him as some sort of hero, though some 371 Zulus were slaughtered as against just 17 British troops. They had the new Martini-Henry rifle as against spears, shields, some ancient guns - and of course courage. This unequal battle may have inspired Hilaire Belloc to pen:
Remember Men
that we have got

the Maxim gun -
and they have not.

Talking of Michael Caine momento’s. I have a very nice framed photo of Michael Caine and Noel Coward from the scene in the Italian Job where ‘Charlie’ breaks into Mr Bridger’s toilet. Accompanied by both actors signatures.

My name isn't Michael Caine. Not a lot of people know that!

Sounds like he is clearing "stuff" as he ages. I have also being trying to clear "stuff" that I have accumulated over the years. I had to clear a lot of dad's "stuff" when he couldn't and as my son (only 40 this month) has been diagnosed with early onset Parkinsons, my clearing out seems a lot more necessary just now!
