Having seen this car today, it seems a genuine and solid proposition for someone. Unfortunately the extent of the cosmetic work is more than I would want to get involved in. I can also confirm that BigAde is a gent, and I am sorry that I could not take this off his hands. My search continues...

Well after a brief flurry of activity but no buyers it looks like I may be looking at breaking it after all. I'm going to be advertising is elsewhere and try to sell it as a going concern for a short while longer, but think most likely outcome is that I'll be breaking and scrapping it. Can't say I didn't try.

That's sad mate, but honestly, with an aging motor a point has to come where keeping it has to be about emotional attachment/reluctance to change than anything rational.
I've had mine for nearly 12 years, put maybe 120,000 miles on it, and spent a small fortune (£4,000-odd in the last 4 years)... but every time it asks for more, I spend it, saying through clenched teeth "Next time is the end..." Yet I've just lashed out more to have two rear shockers, and the handbrake fixed AGAIN... Next time...

Well, she's gone. 9 years of happy ownership is over and I'm already wondering if I've made a mistake. Well, if I'm honest I know I have, but needs must and all that. I am however very happy to report that she won't be broken and is now owned by Southcoaster, a new member on here, who has the time and energy to do all the little jobs that are needed to give her a new lease of life.

Everyone says "It's not worth that much", and it isn't. Its insurance value is £850 but that's not relevant as I have no plans to sell it. I need it for another 3-4 years until I retire (I'm 63 now). When I took my motorcycle for MOT this week there was a used car sales place opposite, and 10-year-old Audi, VW, BMWs etc were up for around £7,000. Even assuming I could get that down by £1,000, I'd be paying that much in interest on finance over three years, so the HP payments would be around £200 per month. So after nine months I'd have paid as much to the finance company as the repair bill, with over two years left to go of paying £200 every month, and at the end of the three years my £6,000 car would now be worth £3,000. Meanwhile my 75 just doesn't deteriorate in value, the next direction in price, if my last two cars are anything to go by, will be upwards. Your brake problem is probably corroded back plates, from memory only about £80 a pair. Last edited by Southern Star; 3rd March 2022 at 16:40.. |

Brother, I feel your pain… Quote:
Yeah I’ve been retired for 4 years now, and most of the time it suits me fine. Had an M3 before this one. I also have a little TF for when I feel silly… Way things are with 2nd hand cars now, you’d be bidding up rather than down… Quote:
Yeah I know. Looks like I’m keeping it for now… Quote:
All done

My thanks to BigAde for his time, communications and, of course, the car. I have more knowledge of older Rovers, of the P6 and SD1 era from my time working in motor parts sales, and hope I am not old enough (yet) to learn new tricks. However, I am sure there will be many questions and queries for you, the knowledgeable crowd, as time goes on. |
