Default The indomitable spirit of Ukranians

Amidst all the terrible news I came across this from the N Y Times that I found uplifting and somewhat reassuring: Ukraine will never be subdued.

I'm truely in awe of their bravery and spirit. Not just the military but the civilian population in the midst of what they are facing daily,it must be terrifying. Some of the TV pictures of the casualties are truely upsetting.I so wish we could help them but understand we cannot risk provoking the madman with his finger hovering over the button

It's interesting to note that many of those who surround him come from the same KGB area and era of the USSR.

Me too. On TV last night, a civilian who had just said goodbye to his wife and infant children as they left on their way to safety. He had decided to stay and fight with his friends to save his country. I'm a pretty hard geezer on the quiet but that got to me.

A substantial number of the Russian people are saying 'not in our names'. I really don't like the thought of a police force that locks up children for placing flowers at the Ukrainian embassy.
The Russian people have had that kleptocratic cabal of ruthless sociopaths as their leaders for too long.

begs the question, what deterrent are nuclear weapons if the other side strikes first?
You have hit the nail on the head but if we do not stand up for Ukraine, how do we now that anyone will stand up for "us" or if we well stand up for "ourselves"?

Had Ukraine been part of NATO the invasion almost certainly wouldn't have happened.Attacking one member would have automatically involved the rest and the west would have been duty bound to defend them. The deterrant would likely have been effective but also give a means to respond in kind, if necessary.
