Personal preference really but EV isn’t for me, simply because I like to have a manual gearbox. I also like driving or riding along thinking about the amazing feat of loads of little parts all moving up/down round and round, thousands of explosions etc mind boggled at the engineering of it, compared to the wizardry that makes an EV go.

I also have to say my wife’s EV is the only car I’ve ever been completely uninterested in driving. She’s had it since April, and is proving great for her, saving £350+ on petrol a month, but that’s replaced by a £100 charging bill, and a £200+ loan payment for the car...

My main question to you though, is how much did the car cost to buy?
Aside from the range, for me to get an EV that could tow our caravan, I think the few EV’s capable are £80,000+. My current car would’ve been around £35,000 new. So a purchase saving of £45,000. At today’s prices that’s around 5000 gallons. I get 55+ mpg, so 5000 gallons will last me 275,000 miles.

Apart from that I can’t find an EV I like the look of, ignoring the lack of range, time to recharge, lack of manual gearbox, and ability to tow.

This is the problem that they will need to overcome for a lot of people, we actually enjoy driving and an EV is little better than a white good with wheels. There are numerous posts on You Tube of people spending X and thought they find it very capable it leaves them cold. Not that I have £30k to £40K to buy one but if I did I would want to enjoy it. That amount of money buys a lot of very nice cars that would be a lot of fun.

My wife would get on with on with an EV as she just goes to work and the shops in her Mini and to be honest as long as it starts, stops and she can listen to her music it would not matter what it was.

Yes, my wife is the same, she finds it a bit boring to drive, but it's just a tool to get from 1 place to another, so not overly bothered. She is saving £50 a month at the moment, and once the loan is paid she'll be saving £250 over what she was paying for fuel.

The EV styling that really p's me off is the Mustang Mach-E. There's some mustang touches, but if they wanted to make an electric mustang, why the hell couldn't it look like a mustang, but have a motor in it instead of an engine. The actual mustang mach-E could just be a Kuga EV or something.

After writing that post last night, out of interest I looked for an EV. Only things I put in to narrow the search was that it had to be electric, and a saloon. That gave me a choice of 4 cars.
The cheapest was the Tesla model 3, but its hideous outside and even worse inside. Don't like the Merc EQS, don't really like the exterior, and the interior looks like a spaceship. The Audi E-Tron, and Porsche Taycan are ok but still not something I think is especially nice, and both are circa £100,000 2nd hand!?

I added the hatchbacks into the mix, and out of all of them the only one I didn't hate was the Tesla model S, but I still don't like the interior, and the cheapest is nearly £29,000, is 6 years old and has done 95,000 miles! And still can't tow anything.
Again, by comparison, my Jag is a similar age, and had done similar miles, but was only £12,000. So as before, a saving of £17,000 to stick with IC, that £17,000 will buy 1890 gallons at current prices, which will allow me to drive 104,000 miles.
A quick calculation I think the Tesla would cost £3,780 to do that mileage, so yes, running costs are a lot less, but the purchase price negates that, as it'd take me 8 years before I started making a saving. And that is still ignoring the fact I don't actually like it, and it can't tow.

And of course we're all still ignoring the pollution involved in making the battery packs for these cars, and all these wind turbines that are made from oil based materials and chemicals, that aren't recyclable...

I think you confuse socialism with poverty, Phil. The two are not the same - as evidenced by there being very little of the former and unfortunately a lot of the latter. Perhaps you prefer poor capitalists?

Wow long would it take in an electric car to do the 360 mile round trip to see my daughter and what would it cost to charge on route?
Apart from the exorbitant purchase price, there are many people such as me who haven't a bats chance in hell of home charging as cars have to park on the opposite side of the road, (grass bank house side and the only pavement on the opposite side. So, I would have to stretch a cable across a narrow access path to 4 houses, down a steep bank and across the main road. I'd also have to pray to any or all Gods that I would be able to park opposite my house. That would be under a yew tree with the attendant needles, berries and copious piles of bird poop. I think not!

Oh i have to love watching this great green revolution unfold!!

On the east coast of Australia, in winter, we are being told to switch everything off except essential things like a light as there is not enough electricity base load power at this time.
Why - because electricity providers say its costing them to much money to make electricity- why , because no one has put any money into continuing to maintain existing coal or gas fired power stations due to the perceived demise of fossil fuels perpetrated by the green groups and others and they have been told there is no future for those plants.
The new labour govt here is stuck between keeping their new found green friends happy and keeping the country going!!
On another note, seems alot of lithium iron batteries are bursting into flames spontaneously lately going into thermal overload!!
All these idealists are doing is pushing their own view of how the world should be
and thats fine but dont make us pay for their social experiments and social adjustment!!
A friend of mine is an electrician, reckons these 30amp fast charging stations being installed in homes are fires waiting to happen as the average house does not have the wiring capacity to take these.
Its a great world we live in where we are told what to do, how to do it, where we can and cant go,
how we are allowed to get there, and when we get there were identified by facial recognition!!
This is just the begining!!!

Spot on genpk, at least for the moment. It seems Australia and UK are in the same experience.
