As you've said that the new lubricating oil turns black straight away it's a sure sign that a dose of Comma Flush Out (not an additive ) is justified. By the sound of it you may need two doses but I've found that once used, provided that the oil change frequency is increased from the manufacturer's 15,000 miles, the new oil remains clean for a good period after a change. It's not expensive so why not give it a try?

Simon
It won't matter how many times you flush the Diesel engine Simon, the oil will go black instantly once it has circulated.

The diesel and the petrol are totally different beasts when it comes to keeping the oil clean.

It has now covered more than 427k miles and nothing lubricated by the oil has ever been replaced. Engine still runs sweet - well sweet as far as stone crushers go.

Mike - I would say your car is testament to the view that it is cars covering low mileage which require the more frequent oil changes and perhaps ultimately an engine oil flush. The thought of condensation contaminating the oil, which it invariably will after short journeys during winter, is not one I like the idea of to the point that all our cars are regularly given a longish drive during the winter months in order to raise the oil to normal running temperature for a period of time.

Steve - I did exactly the same when the CDT was one of our daily cars. These days we don't have a daily need and cover very little mileage - less than £9k a year each for the mrs and myself. We only use the CDT and the XF diesels for longish journeys of 25 miles or more and rely on the petrol Corsa or Twintop for the more regular shorter trips to the supermarket etc. The annual mileage in my CDT is less than 6k and I have reverted to yearly oil changes at MOT time/service time.

Yes I agree anything other than normal conditions and you should change the oil more frequently, which of course is covered in the official servicing schedule; 15k miles or annually, whichever comes first. And with repeated short distance driving (e.g. up to 8km) or stop/start driving or idling for long periods then change the oil every 7.5k miles or 6 months.

This particular engine does seem to be suited to keeping to the service schedule. Had I changed the oil at 7.5k intervals whilst covering the mileage I do, I would have carried out another 28 odd oil and filter changes for no benefit.
