Default Watchdog

Anyone watched Watchdog tonight, BMW M47 diesel engines (in BMWs) timing chain failures. Any evidence this has happened in our cars?

Good job they haven't done a program on 1.8 K Series head gasket failures then!

They said it affects engines between 2007 and 2009, so we should be in the clear !

Just seen that and used the re-wind option on Sky, as trebor says it appears to be 07-09 1, 3 and 5 series with the M47 lump. I escape by a couple of years !!

Then technically it's the M47TU2D20 engine that Rover never used, as they'd gone pop by then!

Default BBC watchdog m47 bmw diesel engine!

Anyone see tonight's programme? Apparently lots of Bmws being wrecked by the timing chain snapping, into 10k of damage in some cars!
I didn't think these engines had a timing chain?

Same as our cars I'm afraid Mark and yes the diesels do have a timing chain (which should be good for 250,000 miles) the rest of our range have timing belts!

Luckily MG Rover went bust in 2005, M47 problems between 2007 - 2009 and on all models from 1 thru 5 series. What a shame that the M47 can cost much, much more to put right than a 1.8 K series when things go bad, incidentally they are apparently treating service claims differently if not carried out by BMW dealerships.
