Default Plug-in hybrids emit MORE CO2 than diesels

Who, or what are we meant to believe?

Newly released data from TMC highlights worryingly high fuel consumption and emissions in real world driving for hybrid vehicles.

Oh for petes sake.
What a load of tosh that article is.
Do you own analysis but this time imagine if you will that users of hybrids will plug in and recharge overnight.
This kind of rubbish reporting makes my blood boil.
I guess thats why it gets reported. It got my attention.
Objective achieved.

I actually thought it made some valid points - my brother-in-law has a PHEV, plugs it in when he can, but uses it for a 100 mile commute, so the battery only provides power for the first 20 miles or so - he only gets 40-50 mpg when like this. He could get the same or better from a diesel. Of course, there is the separate air quality/NO2 emissions issue - it is not all about CO2.

It states what should be quite obvious, If you have a 'PHEV' carrying all that battery weight but use the IC engine more than the electric then it uses more fuel than a car with similar size engine and no heavy batteries. Obvious innit?

It's saying that many PHEVs are being bought for fleet use where mileages are high and journeys are much longer than battery power can take you and they aren't (yet) suited to high mileage and long journey efficiency.

Add 'higher emissions' into the text for SEO and clickbait....

It's diapoointing that a report such as this uses the word "research" - the basis of the report is a simple observation rather than research.

It's reasonable to expect that professional fleet managers would apply some common sense and intelligence in their buying or approving decisions. The report would suggest that is not universally the case. This should be the point of concern and not that hybrid cars used predominently in a non-hibrid mode are not delivering the optimum performance levels.

The reason that the uptake of diesel vehicles was encouraged was because the diesel combustion cycle produces far less Co2 than burning petrol.

PHEV is a reasonable option, if you don't mind the fact that you are either pushing around an engine you don't need to use because most of your trips are under 30 miles (when you could use a pure EV anyway!) or you have a more expensive vehicle than you would otherwise need and barrel up and down the motorway dragging a lot more weight with a battery pack that is doing little. (And my wife wants a V60 diesel hybrid next! )

I think you have to bear in mind the context and the publication the article was published in. In this case it was for fleet managers predominantly and much of what was mentioned is almost certainly true in the typical use of fleet cars. I don't think that it's trying to say that the use of hybrids is more polluting although there is always the arguement with regards to the burning of fossil fuels to provide the electricity to charge ev's but that's another subject completely. However for the average company rep trolling up and down motorways all day long they probably don't fare so well against the traditional options. It could certainly be of some interest to fleet managers that might have taken the decision to go hybrid on the basis of the tax breaks that they bring with them especially if there is some talk about those breaks coming to an end.
