Default Rear windscreen chrome trim.

Hi all. Just been starting this week's job of sealing up the clips under the rear windscreen trim.

Once I got it started I decided to pull the whole lot off to give the underneath a good clean. (It was awful).

Got me thinking since I have broken an assortment of clips as I was expecting to do but has anyone just applied a self adhesive chrome weather strip instead of putting the origin nal back on. On mine the rubber part of the trim has perished badly and pretty much needs replacing anyway so I was just thinking of removing all the clips, sealing up the holes, then adding some similar looking weather strip. Could even be silicones into position to make it even more robust.

Just a thought as it removes the leak path and also makes changing the strip even easier if it ever had to come off again.

Ignore the spelling etc, life's too short to proof read.

Cheers

Shaun

Default Rear screen

Hi Shaun

How did you go with your idea about the rear screen?
Funnily enough I thought of the exact same thing as mine is leaking through there now and I want to correct the design so it never leaks again.

Thanks

Marinabrian did something like that - glued tiny squares of aluminium tape over each hole, then Rapid Araldited the clips to the bodywork, over the tape.

I've thought about it myself, but I think mine is leaking through some sort of f'ing bodywork seam now

If you think that the joint between the rear wing and the boot, by the boot hinge is leaking, I sealed my 2.5V6 by brushing some Waxoyle down into the joint. No water in boot now for over two years now.

I changed the trim about 8 months ago, it was literally falling apart. New trim is quite pricey at about £150, but I removed the old trim without breaking anything, and cleaned out nearly 20 years of dirt. It did leak into my boot when it rained heavily, and I was looking to seal something. However everything looked fine, so I just fitted the new trim and it's never leaked since. Daft as it sounds, I'm thinking it was the dirt that was causing the problem, but don't ask me how! I just know it's never leaked since.

Yeah... I applied Capt Tolley's to the obvious seam a few times, but there's still water coming through that area somewhere.

Despite spending quite a bit of time in the boot with a torch while the girlfriend empties water over the area, I still can't see where it's coming through. From memory, I don't think it can be the clips, as she's pouring below their level
