i can see bent stuff and out of place stuff but surly they are not valves. what are they?

Well they look like valve pushrods to me - not a pretty sight though.

Well it looks like a V8, not a KV6.. can you say what engine it is??

push rods, sounds better but a bit old fashioned.

Ouch! Many years ago I had an AEC760 coach which shed a big end. I got a new crankshaft, shells and rings, heads skimmed and bores glaze busted. They were pigs to time up and like an idiot, once I'd finished I foolishly turned it over on the starter motor. I heard a lot of pings and discovered I had messed up the timing and bent all 12 pushrods. They all looked like the photo. With 12 new pushrods, retimed and carefully turned over by hand, I then proceeded to get it started. A lesson learned.

Seized inlet valves, gummed up by modern petrol. We've been recommissioning her & she was running beautifully in August, 2019. Then Covid happened & when we got back to her last year, all the engine would do was churn. More time passed then last week we bit the bullet & pulled her hat off.
SD1 heads are going back on as they have bigger valves & flow better than the originals & just in case, a new steel timing set too, the originals have nylon teeth which can shear off. And l'm taking the opportunity to tidy up the engine & bay while there's more room, which also makes it easier for me to change the heater unit, the the old matrix leaks.
