Check how secure the exhaust is. Tired or missing rubbers can cause the pipe to move enough to hit the cross brace or some other part of the tunnel. The pipe on my old 1.8T dropped enough to bring the cross brace within the range of exhaust movement and it is a really solid thump.

A broken spring? If it breaks very close to the bottom you can get your symptoms.

Funnily enough, the 1.8T had a new exhaust not long before I bought it and I'd had it a few months when it dropped for some reason. My mechanic mate tried adjusting it and replaced rubbers which although it tightened things up didn't cure the problem. He ended up fabricating an additional mount between the end of the tunnel and the silencer.

When I had similar it was a (very rusty) front spring letting go. Luckily no tyre damage
