Foreign Animals
Ok so this is daft but here we go.
Last night my wife was on Skype to a friend in Germany who has a pet cat. Her cat started meowing and our cat came over to Miriam and started meowing at the computer. It really sounded like they were having a chat:what: So this is the question. Can an animal of the same species communicate with an animal of the same species but from anywhere else in the world? I know I need to get out more but it has me intrigued! |

Well they say dogs get an "accent" maybe cats do too..................mine came from Blyth so he's probably quite rough spoken "Whey meow like" whereas yours probably talks like this "Och meoooooooow"

I would assume they could communicate, a meow is a meow no matter where it comes from I would assume. Could be wrong though.

I think it's all about the pitch and intonation... that's what differentiates the noises that cats and dogs make, I think.
So in theory I think they can communicate. There was a programme on TV that was filmed in America - at various points dogs barked, and my dog, who was in the same room, kept pricking his ears up and occasionally walking around to try and see what all the fuss was about. It may be that they recognise the noises as those from their own species, but I doubt they can pick up the finer details... my dog isn't that smart anyway! |

My two cats don't communicate with each other but they don't make the same sounds either. One makes short "Mew mew" sounds, whilst the other makes long "Moooow" sounds.
Interestingly (to me at least) my male cat occasionally watches television, but only when there are grizzly bears on screen. He's done this many times and walks away as soon as the bears are no longer on screen. |

How Do They Know...
How does a dog Know it's a Dog and not a cat? How does a Homing Pigeon know where home is at? So many different breeds of the same animals and yet they know before a sound is made...

Cat's are weird things, Apparently the two brothers we have are intelligent enough to know the sound of the car before I come past the window and scoot out the catflap to greet me.
Wow!! so smart! Not really because then they sit on the drive exactly where I want to reverse the car!! Dumbarses!!!
