Wood turning
Anyone do it?
I've just been given a record power wood lathe and 2 buckets of tools. I have no idea of what to do or make so you tube will be getting a beating tonight. Just wondering if anyone does it on here? Stan

Yes..
I do it from time to time, I bought a wood lathe cheap to make door knobs for my house that were missing when I bought the house. It's very rewarding but very messy, and wellington boots with the trousers over them is recommended along with goggles and a mask, an apron is also good as the shavings get everywhere.

I was taught to use a lathe by my father, haven't used one in a few years. A good dust mask is a must as some woods give off sawdust which can be quite toxic.
A good place to start learning is to turn 'mushrooms'. It will help you learn to turn both convex and concave curves into the wood as well as straight cylinders without using a lot of wood. |

Since getting a wood dust allergy due to lack of extraction and PPE, I don't any more!!! Lovely relaxing way to work but be careful. I've seen a few nasty accidents due to loose clothing, jewellery and even long hair!!! A scalping is worse than a shaving!
