CDTi Engine failure to start
'52 plate.
EGR valve has previously been cleaned. Everything was working ok. Parked up. 20 minutes later, engine turns over fine but fails to start. In tank pump is whining nicely. Under bonnet pump buzzes steadily for 60 seconds. Fuel level is ~30%. Moderate amount of rain recently. Air temperature ~14°C. Temperature gauge and all dashboard lights (including oil) are working as expected. Battery voltage was 11.9V (bit low) Tacho is reading ~150rpm under starter. Battery is now on charge Q) If crankshaft sensor has failed, will the tachometer work ok ? Any other ideas ? Relay dropping out due to low battery voltage ? Easy Start on order, in case it helps. A leaking injector has been suggested as the possible problem. Subsequent attempts at starting the next day after charging are unsuccessful. Last edited by MarkS; 17th October 2018 at 14:08.. |

If the needle moves during cranking then the crank sensor should be working, cam sensor can be tested by removing and placing in the fridge for a few mins then refitting and trying again, the cam sensor normally fails when warm/hot.
Don’t get to involved with easy start, it’s not a great idea. If you need a cam sensor just give me a shout Mick

I have no idea why it wont start.
first thing, charger battery. is it work checking to make sure fuel is being pumped to the injectors? macafee2 |

I’d suggest that you have a word with CB Chris as he has a T4 and isn’t a long way away, if you was local to me I’d have chucked it on T4, just out of interest when was the last time you checked the plenum chamber

As already stated, both fuel pumps are making noises.
I am led to believe that if the ECU were flooded, oil light & tacho would not work. |

The plenum has been checked and is clean and dry.

I have tried a jump start from a Land Rover, with 25mm2 jump leads without success. When jump starting, the engine turned over faster.
I swear that while trying to start from the internal battery alone, that there was a ticking noise from the internal fusebox area, in synchronization with every rotation of the engine, maybe a relay dropping out with a momentary drop in battery voltage. I'm beginning to suspect a dead cell in the battery. But even so, it should start with a jump start. All fuses and relays in the engine fusebox have been removed and inspected. Where is the glow plug relay ? |

If you are talking about a High Pressure fuel check be extremely careful.
The pressure is so high that fuel can be injected through your skin into your body. Diesel in your blood will kill you..------ Don't worry about the glow plugs they are not needed to start the diesel engine unless the temperature is well below zero. Could be something simple like a poor connection to the end of the high pressure fuel rail. If the ECU does not detect high pressure it won't fire up the injectors. As others have said. Cam sensor. Usual culprit. |
