Default fuel supply issue

my 04 connossieur, always been a good starter until diesel gets too low, then expect it to take some time and waiting ....a new development now, she wont start atall after letting fuel get down to about a quarter...have now put 10litres in tank and with the back pipe on the under bonnet filter off, i can see that its pumping through, so there is a pump working...but no starting as yet
shall i keep on trying?whats the next simple solution to look for?
Thanks for looking

oh its finally worked now.....but if anyone can remind me what is the likely cause of this common issue that means ive always got to avoid the low end of the tank,is it suggestive of a faulty tank pump...the bonnet pump being the only functioner?

Yes its the in tank pump problem, which also has venturi system that lifts fuel from one side of the saddle tank to the other. If its not working you rely on slosh from one side to the other to keep the UB pump supplied.

A trader here supplies the VDO pump. That's apparently the only one that is certain to be equal to the original in quality and longevity.

as long as you keep your tank more than a quarter full your ubp can run your car for quite some miles ive heard stories of people running theres only on the ubp pump for 20,000 miles or so . but when the itp not working it puts greater strain on the ubp hope this helps rgds mark

The pump pick up and spill return pipe are both on the same side of the tank - the offside.

The reason the UBP ends up sucking air when the ITP fails and the tank level drops too low is that the self priming valve that sits on top of the ITP is exposed and open - it only shuts with pump pressure when the ITP is working.

Find a nice quiet spot and stop the engine. Undo the fuel filler flap, turn on the ignition and put your ear to the fuel filler opening a listen for a humming noise of the itp. If there is no noise, your itp has gone awol. Get in touch with Jules at Colwyn Wales and buy one of the VDO original itp from Him. I have one in my tank because mine packed up. Don’t buy a cheapo.
