Default Rover 2.5 connie won't start

Hello,

My rover 75 2002 2.5 connie won't start , (90,000 miles it has done.)
Sounds like starter motor runs but does seem to not engage with the engine.
I have tried a new battery, Same result,
Any ideas?

Many thanks

John

Sounds like the solenoid. You might try giving the starter motor a whack with a hammer just in case it's jammed. A solenoid repair kit is cheap enough if you're that way inclined, otherwise a second hand motor can be had for upwards of £30. A new one's about £100.

If it runs it's not jammed. His motor runs.

Maybe the free wheel unit is dead.---

It is pretty common for years of dirt, crud and clutch dust to accumulate on the bendix shaft and stop the gear from moving far enough to engage the flywheel ring gear. Cleaning should fix it.

If the gear does not move the full distance the contacts in the solenoid wont touch and the motor wont turn.

It's a Pre-engaged starter. It's not an inertia starter.

Default Rover 2.5 connie won't start

Hello Again

Well, It would not start again the next day, Same problem.
So, I changed the battery, As it was also was flashing front lights when I was trying to start it.
The battery was about three years old, and the car had not been used much lately. and it seemed it was dead then.
So hopefully, it will be ok now,

Many thanks all who kindly helped.

John

Not dead John, just discharged. 24 hours on a smart charger is the best solution. Worth bearing in mind when it happens again.

if you have discharged the battery to the extent of your lights flashing there could be a chance that your key and ews transponders my have been scrambled
thus resulting in your car not starting rgds mark
