Default Fracking approved in the U.K.

Sensible decision IMO. The appeal against it was driven by emotion and spin rather than fact.

And before anyone says “OK for you - you don’t live near a fracking site!” - I actually live not that far from Wytch Farm in the Purbecks which used an early form of fracking to extract oil.

It is the largest onshore oil field in Western Europe. And yet you can be just a few yards from the well-head and never know it was there.

Well done to the appeals court for not being bullied by those on some sort of mission to compromise the U.K.’s energy security.

let's face it the way the world is going we need to be as self sufficient as possible, and not rely on foreign influence for such necessities

There are too many NIMBY's. We have housing shortages and these NIMBY's don't want them built near them, we all need oil and gas so where do they think it is going to come from?

I was told by a customer recently that the village he lives in are putting in an objection against a proposed wind farm. Do these people not accept times are changing and if we want to stay warm in the winter, cook our dinner and watch the box at night we need to start thinking where this energy is going to come from.

The estimate is that the U.K. has 1000 trillion cubic feet of onshore and offshore shale gas. Obviously not all of that is recoverable. But if 50% is recoverable then with current U.K. gas consumption of just 3.5 trillion cubic feet of gas per annum then we are looking at about 140 years of supply.

Combine that with ever improving technology in Solar, Wind and Wave power and we are looking at a very positive situation.

I'm not sure one way or the other about fracking but I know companies like to over egg the pudding on controversial things.

I suppose we'll have to wait and see if it's worth it.

It’s not “companies” making these estimates - the figures are from the 2013 British Geological Survey. Which incidentally- is now, 5 years later, seen to be a significant under estimate.
