Source of noise
Evening all.
For a little while now I've been hearing a noise I can't really pinpoint. Its not particularly loud. I think it's coming from somewhere around the drivers side engine bay. (CDTI Auto) it doesn't sound mechanical, and you can only really hear it when idling. With my limited knowledge, its sounds like a belt or one of the cogs, but not sure what else it could be. Shes sat on 150k, would it be time to do fan belt, water pump, ac belts etc? I haven't any proof of when they were done. Cheers Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk |

Well, with you being in Looe, there is certainly a good chance the belts could be PASTY their best.

What sort of sound is it? No uneasy engine noises, but would like to recognise it if/when it starts (124K approaching as we speak).

Hard to explain. You got the normal diesel clatter then an odd sound. It's not particularly loud.just a different sound. Defintly not coming from the engine. Sounds like it's down the left side of the engine bay. Couple of belts down there. As Brian said. Could be crank pulley.

That's my thinking, one of them 2. Looking around the forum. Someones taken a few videos of the sound of the crank shaft pulley and mine sounds nothing like that and nowhere near as bad. Maybe just the start of it though. Does sound a little more like a water pump tensioner or something. I'm not losing water though. To be honest, it sounds like some sort of tensioner. Just hope it's not to expensive this close to Christmas.

Best thing to do is buy another tensioner pulley or idler pulley. You can try running the engine and run some water on the crank pulley. If the noise goes, it’s the crank pulley. My bet is idler/ tensioner pulley.
