Default Cleaning Of the EGR valve

Morning gents, this week I'm hoping to replace the intercooler o rings that I've had sat around for the last couple of months, and I'm sure after 196k miles my egr valve could do with a clean, what's the best thing to clean it with? just normal engine degreaser or Gunk or should I take it off and soak it in petrol? when cleaning it should it be reomved? Are there parts on both sides that need cleaning or is everthing excessible from the one side?

I found alloy wheel cleaner worked a treat in attacking the black stuff

And its best to remove it to get at it from both sides - its only 4 allen bolts holding it on.

Mikey be sure to wear latex gloves. I bought a load from Halfords for about £4 (a week later!!!). The stuff that comes of it is NASTY and took nearly two weeks to get off my hands!!

I used loads of swarfega to loosen the gunk as I didn't have any sprays to hand.

Also make sure you take care with the gasket on the EGR to engine.

Have fun

From past experience I would think (but haven't tried on this particular part) that carb cleaner would work superbly. Am doing this weekend so will give some feedback then.

Sorry, but was NOT going to touch my camera with that stuff on my hands.

PCV next, just off to buy the mdified one.

Its on the right hand side of the engine near the front. Its the one with the large black rubber hose going onto it. Its retained by 4 bolts. I'm sure somebody will post you a pic soon.

Found one

best way i have found is: remove. clean as best you can with toothbrush and diesel. then toothbrush and "solvol autosol". in a tube from halfrauds.
gets it nice and clean. specially for aluminium polishing. used to use this many years ago on my motor bike.

Thanks for the ideas gents, it's a job I've got planned for Friday afternoon, I'll try to take some photos so it could maybe be done as a "How to" as I intend to do my intercooler seals at the same time but I'm going to try the new improved keep my bumper on method
