Here's the reality Simon. When the OP used the term clipped, I knew exactly what he meant. As did the poster (COLVERT) who offered the term 'absorbed' as an alternative. My response was that clipped was more accurate. Most people would not have known what was meant by absorbed but most would have understood the term clipped.

To prove the point, I would say put DC through a diode clipping circuit and see what it does. It will modify the DC voltage to the design voltage of the clipping circuit!

I would therefore argue that even in plain English, clipped makes more sense than absorbed.

This is going to be one of those occasions when we agree to disagree.

Talking

One 'could' argue that a battery does not give out DC, but an AC signal of EXTREMELY low frequency, with a typical time period from maximum voltage (when new) down to a voltage (at which the car will no longer start) in the order of ~4-7 years, at which point the battery gets replaced.

But that would start a whole new argument, and I wouldn't want to start yet another argument over very small details.

I think I'll go hide

Can i just say..... I knew what he meant buy clipped and i think that is all that matters.

A clipped amplifier saves th drive units from straight shorts (cone forced to full exstension and thus over currenting th coil) Ie; blown speaker.

A battery acts as a capacitor in lets say a house alarm. When battery gets old it stops been a buffer and electrical spikes are allowed threw and set it off when not needed.

I hope th word "currenting, capacitor, buffer, spike" and there maybe more miss used words iv said cause great offence. As shamfully we all need to go off th original thread and av a bit of a laugh now and again..:-)

It's a while now since I was active in electronics Maninder but a "voltage limiter" is how I would describe that circuit. I don't see any reason to replace that descriptive, accurate and unambiguous term but that seems to be the fashion these days.
