No, you can swap the unit without fear of upsetting anything.

It doesn't seem to be rust in the spare wheel well. Just 19 years of accumulated dirt !!

I have just removed the 'new' SatNav unit and found that the pink plug was not attached. I re-attached it and moved the locking arm into position and put the unit back.
Hooray, I thought. Problem solved. But no. Still no display. Any other thoughts anyone ?? |

The person from the breaker's yard had the forked prongs to remove the old one and he attached the new one.
I have asked the breaker whether the Alpine head is available since there is not a problem with radio codes. The Satnav was £35 so if available, hope the head will be similarly priced. Thanks everyone. |

Hi Andrew,
This is a very unusual fault which I don't believe we've come across before. Would you like to try my video module in your car since that's the unit responsible for the screen display? [Correction: it's the navigation computer] I'm just down the road from you. Send me a PM if you're interested. Simon

Thread resolution
Andrew brought his tourer over this afternoon. The fault wasn't with the head unit's LCD screen. The second-hand navigation disc drive/computer was the culprit. The disc inside (which Andrew suspects is a copy of a BMW disc, it wasn't Navteq or VDO Dayton) didn't work either.
I am pleased to have been able to help him with an accurate diagnosis at zero cost. Simon
