Default connecting a sat nav or dash cam

In all my other cars i have always used the cigarette lighter socket to power my sat nav or dash cam. I note from the handbook it says it should not be used but use an auxiliary power socket. Is it safe to use the cigarette lighter to power the sat nav/dash cam or do i need to have another power socket added?

Get a hardwiring kit from ebay and run it to the fusebox. It keeps the dash area nice and tidy.

I agree with Trikey. Not only does it look tidier it stops the risk of flattening your battery. Notorious.

i think when fitting a dash cam you need to consider if you want it on all the time the car is parked for instance in a public car park or if you only want it on when driving. I would not think having it on overnight or all day is good but it may be ok but eventually if the car is not used the battery will go flat.

For info only-The sat nav or dash cam would only ever be used while driving and would be removed when not required. I didn't intend having the dash cam hard wired in .i bought it so i could take it to use in whichever car i am using at the time. It was never my intention to leave it plugged in all the time.

The sucker for the windscreen may not like being moved from car to car. I have had to change the sucker for my Nextbase as it kept falling of the windscreen and I put it down to being taken off and being put back on again time after time

Ive recently fitted a dash cam with rear camera on my 75, i opted for the type that has a built in rear view mirror, all in all it went in ok, i decided to retain the cigarette lighter fitting to power mine, but it also has a built in battery, for shunt protection, luckily my 75 is a pre facelift so the lighter socket is only live when acc is on

The easiest way to power a dash cam is to use a piggy-back fuse. You replace a fuse in the fuse box with this. That gives you the choice of an always on fuse or one switched by the ignition. To this I attach a cig lighter socket and just plug the adaptor on the end of the dash cam cable into it and secure it with a piece of electrical tape. Simple and easily reversible if you decide to remove it.
The pic shows the piggy-back adaptor in place and the cig lighter socket strapped to the left side of the fuse box.
