Strange goings on Andy.

The EP display is back along with inoperable tacho and coolant temp display.

Still managed to drive OK, although only around the avenue.

Removed and replaced fuse 4 all whilst the engine and ignition was off. Should I have put either the ignition or engine on at any point while the fuse was out?

It looks like its just a fault between the CAN bus and IPK, but where who knows. I've just downloaded the Body Electrics Workbook so Ill just have to plough through that unless you can suggest a shorter process.

Cheers

Paul

When I bought my first 75 V6 back in 2001 I had a fault with EP in the first week. The car would lose power and the gearbox would make a thumping noise as if a driveshaft was coming out. It reset when switched off and restarted. I took it to the dealer and they said it was down to a poor earth in the n/s kick panel.

Default Latest TOAF Error Codes

Having checked via TOAF these are the two main engine error codes...

P1646 - ECM- CAN Bus missing node-Transmission Control Module
P1647- ECM- CAN Bus missing node - Instrument Control Pack

When expanded the errors both show the same...
-signal out of range
-Sporadic error

There is also a related error on the IKE
F4 CAN Bus 244
-Open Circuit
-Sporadic Error

Does this sound like its just a cable issue (shorting) or is it more likely to need an ECM repair?

Cheers

Paul

Good Morning Paul,

It seems only the IPK is affected, as you've said. With this in mind and that KV6 ECM faults are extremely rare, I'd recommend that you follow the Workbook's advice to look for a wiring fault. Any information that a T4 session can give you will also be valuable.

Edit: Looking at the CAN bus wiring diagram, header connector C0293 seems a likely culprit!

Thanks Simon

Well that's a relief that its unlikely to be the ECM, I'll just have to give it a good visual inspection including checking the C0293 junction box and if I can't find anything obvious its off to the local T4 boys.

As an aside I've got a rattle which I think is the forward heat shield so I'm going to get under the thing and check if the Lambda sensor wiring has been compromised. During my research I've discovered that there's is an earth from the ECM via pin 2 on the sensor so if this has been damaged it may cause these anomolies. Or am I talking rubbish?!!!

Suppose its just a case of having patience and time!!

Cheers

Unfortunately these "headers" are sometimes not junction boxes but splices bound in harness tape. According to the connectors section of RAVE, this one is behind the passenger airbag (there's a photo to assist identification).
It might be easier to try re-seating the IPK connector first.

That connection is used by the ECM to switch the lambda sensor heaters on and off.

Funnily enough the tacho and temp display weren't working, however I've just connected TOAF, scanned the engine then cleared all DTC's and the car is back to normal.

The next challenge, of course, is to determine what caused the fault in the first place, and try to prevent it happening again.

It sounds as if there could be a potential problem in the CAN bus

Cheers

Does the pertinent wiring loom pass near the N/S headlight? I seem to remember many years ago that a similar problem was caused by the loom chaffing in that area. I can't be certain as my memory is worse than a goldfish.

Yep it does Steve, close to the bumper and then back down the wing. I've taken the wheel arch liner out as well as the Air Filter for a proper inspection but no fault found yet.

This could be a long saga I think!!!

The chafing Steve is talking about is where the loom crosses over the top of the frame rail. There is a welded seam on the to that sticks up vertically like a knife edge for the loom that sits on top of it. There are pictures here somewhere.
