A decent Satnav?
My girlfriend is looking for a decent cheap satnav. I wondered if any of you tech gurus might have a model to recommend? I remember hearing about some units that run Windows CE and can have Igo or TomTom loaded onto them? Any advice gents?

Garmin has generally been the professionals (pilots, sailors etc) choice. I have the Street Pilot 510, but I don't think it's made anymore. It links to my phone vis bluetooth for a handsfree system. It also reads out any texts I receive. I assume the newer models do as well.

 I have always used TomTom units.
Had a Rider 2 system on my Motorcycles which was absolutely superb, and now have a Go530 in Roxy the Rover. I bought it new and cheap on Amazon and I've now added my wife's cheeky voice for directions, Rover start up screen, a rover 75 as the direction arrow etc. It's bluetooth, and you can add traffic alerts, real time fuel prices and a host of other goodies. It has lane guidance which is very useful for plonkers like me The downside is poor battery life, so I charge it fully before a drive and always carry the cigarette lighter socket charger in the car. A great bit of kit combined with a donut mounting pad

Thanks for the advise, the girlfriend wants a new one otherwise I would have had one you linked to Kandyman. It looks like TomTom will be the way forward. Cheers.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 200w and it is brilliant. Not only can you use it in car, but if you are in a strange town you can swap it over to "pedestrian" take it with you, and find you way around town and back to your car with it..
Note, for the seafarers, it also works in "marine" mode and you can fix way points like channel markers etc etc.. . Last edited by James.uk; 14th September 2009 at 22:34.. |

Not being funny but decent & cheap don't usually mix - you get what you pay for. I have Garmin, don't think you can go wrong with it as they apparently make the software for some of the others & are supposed to be the most reliable!

Yeah sometimes you can find a gem though thats a good trade off between quality and value. Personally I have TomTom on my mobile phone which I use and I think it's fairly decent although the last few times I've used it it's tried to direct me down pedestrianised areas and the wrong way down one way steets.
She's ended up getting this unit from Ebuyer. It gets good reviews and can be updated with either TomTom or Igo8. |

If you can't go for an integrated solution, I'd recommend Tomtom over the others I've seen, but only just. I really don't think there's a great deal in it.
