Also worth trying using the "selfie" camera on your phone as a lot of new phones have an IR filter on their main camera.

I can get an led in this spec

5mm LED
940nm wavelength (most common)
20 degree beam width
100 mA continuous, 1000 mA pulse
Approx 1.6V forward voltage
