Can you elaborate on erratic? The gauge has certain peculiarities built-in.

Not the most accurate guage at the best of times to be honest. The On Board Diagnostic thingy is more accurate. Can't find the link to it though.

Default Gauge

Hi the gauge rises above the cold and on a longer run goes to about a quarter. My garage chap is having a look tomorrow. Hope it's not too expensive. It's a late 05 reg diesel. 9O k runs well.

There is a common issue with the diesel thermostat. It fails by opening too early, thus making it take an age to reach optimum temp. (88 degrees C +/- 2 degrees)

There are literally hundreds of threads and thousands of posts on this topic within the forums. LINK and an in depth LINK

Replacing the thermostat is seen as the correct way of fixing the problem, however it is only recently that the current 'correct' thermostats are believed to be reliable, with the versions prior known to fail in the same way within a couple of years (or less!). It is a fiddly and relatively time consuming task to replace, so factor a relatively high labour charge if going down this route via a garage. A How To is HERE (there is another one, with images HERE)

The alternative which is effective, although seen as a bodge by some, is to obtain a Renault 5 thermostat rated at between 86 and 91 degrees, and fit into the top hose. First time fitting, should be less than an hour to fit. (this is the method I have chosen however, I will be replacing the original thermostat when the seal begins to leak - another common but less so, issue) How To HERE

THIS is the one I used, and compared to others that I have tried, it is a thing of beauty (if a thermostat can be described as such lol) and after around 3 years, is still allowing the car to perform as it should.

There is also an alternative inline thermostat modification, but is a little more expensive HERE.

The most important thing about an in-line stat is it must be watertight when closed. Renault 5 stats branded Wahler, First Line and Gates are known to work very well. Other brands/unbranded ones may be much less effective in raising the running temperature.

By the way, the temperature gauge is correct and is not being erratic. The 'quarter up' mark means the engine temperature is around 60 -70C. It should be as near 90C as you can get it. The 'normal' (mid-way) point ranges from 75C to 115C, so rather meaningless at best.

It should rise to and then stay on the 9 o'clock position.
