Handbrake adjustment is through the drum on the rear wheel. It is not always as simple as this though due to flex in the handbrake compensators on the handle to cable. There are uprated compensators available and a "How To" on the forum. There is also some adjustment on the cable handle but this is usally not necessary once the compensator and wheel adjustments have been done.

I use the following and the handbrake always locks the wheels at MOT and holds fully on 3 clicks. I tend to do both sides at the same time but you can do it one side at a time then do a final tweak on both sides

1- slacken off the nut at the handbrake lever to the end of its threads

2- adjust up each adjuster in the drum so the shoes are dragging lightly
3- apply the hand brake fully
4- recheck at the drums that the shoes are dragging lightly
5- repeat steps 2-4 until there is no change after applying the handbrake

6- tighten up the nut on the handbrake lever so approx. 1 inch of thread is showing above the nut. Apply and release the handbrake

7- adjust up each adjuster in the drum so the shoes are dragging lightly
8- apply the hand brake fully
9- recheck at the drums that the shoes are dragging lightly
10- repeat steps 7-9 until there is little change after applying the handbrake

if this does not get you an excellent handbrake on 3-4 clicks then you likely need a new compensator.

The adjustment wheel is clicked UP for tighter if it is at 1 o'clock on the wheel, it is clicked DOWN for tighter if it is at 11 o'clock.

The above sounds like a lot of work but really takes about 10 minutes once you get the hang of finding the adjuster through the wheel bolt hole.

The interior of the drums needs to be as rust free as possible.
Apply the hand brake lightly now and then when on the move. This will remove any rust from inside the drums.

If you don't do this the hand brake will just get worse and worse making you apply the brake lever harder and harder until the compensator bends and becomes useless.---

Should be like the picture below.

The above adjustment advice is spot on, but I'd recommend bashing the drums with a soft mallet after each adjustment, it helps centralise the shoes.

Me too . I adjust the drums until they are rubbing then tap with with a copper hammer. It's surprising how slack they go ! Keep adjusting and tapping until it makes no difference then adjust the handbrake cable. I do this when I have fitted new shoes and then any adjustment in the future just requires a few clicks at the drums only.
