Another thing too, is to make sure you provide a receipt for the sale, and note the time on it. If the buyer has an accident on the way home, without transferring their insurance, or covering anew, the seller's insurance could get dragged into any claims - which is not what you want if you are replacing the car you have just sold, any no claims discounts will be suspended until the matter has been resolved.

Good question, someone in the industry can correct me if I'm wrong. As far as cover for the seller, against what, theft or accident damage? No. only if the person driving was to run the seller over then they'd be covered for injury.

OK, I wrote that then thought about it some more. If the first party is the insured driver, the second party is the insurer. Then the owner could be a third party. So can the owner make a claim for loss or damage (or theft) by the first party? Maybe, I'm not sure. Best check the small print.

This is how I thought it, after initially thinking it was only the test driver to have any direct cover, with the seller being left out completely. But when you sit down and think of it, the test driver is the one with their own third party cover, and the seller would have a claim against the test driver, therefore become a third party, as well as any others involved.

I have checked the small print, but couldnt make head nor tail of it regarding this. I have even asked when I was arranging my insurance once. No one at the time could answer definitively, but I didnt push it lol.
