Default Strange knocking noise from engine.

Hello, I have an issue with my 75CDTi which I can't work out and wonder if anyone knows what it might be.

Starts up ok, after about 5 seconds a loud rhythmic knocking noise starts up, maybe 4-6 beats per second, this is coming from somewhere near the power steering pump. When the engine is revved up it disappears. When engine returns to tickover it reappears. If the engine is turned off and on again, again it starts normally and the noise appears after 5 seconds or so. Turning the steering wheel has no effect.

Is this a known fault and if so what is it?

Crank pulley very possibly failing which is a known issue or could just be a worn belt

Thanks, belts were all new about a year ago, one of the other boaters here just has a listen and said it sounds like the cam chain.

Will get it in to the garage next week.

A bit more reading of the forum and it does seem like it's the crank pulley. Couldn't have failed at a worse time really. I see DMGRS sell their own pulley for £99 or genuine Corteco for £215, obviously that's a big difference, any advice re which to get?

Few years ago my DMGRS pulley collapsed after little more than a year: they give me some refund and I bought the Corteco but I don't remember it quite as much as that.

I've found this at £139.

I've ordered a lot of parts from DMGRS in the past and I can't fault them but they are charging £219 for the same part. I just wondered if anyone has bought from this suppler before?

Yes I have; it's BS Motors in Sandy, Bedfordshire, an X-Part agent. You won't go wrong with them for parts.
