Here is the provocation from Brian posted just three days ago. I hope that you, tommy15 and Simondi will take the trouble to look at it.

So do I Mike! Changing the timing belt on my 4 cylinder 8 valve C3 wasn't a big deal but the amount and difficulty of the dismantling required for the Rover V6 is quite frankly ludicrous! Simon

I've looked at it and I think it's a shame that it all reads like being in a playground.
As to the questions raised I have no mechanical or technical skills or knowledge so cannot enter into the discussion with anything other than my own thoughts. My thoughts though is that i will look to have the belts on my 190 replaced roughly every 5 years. My choice but speaking as the guy who always gets the parking ticket,.never wins the raffle and always looses a bet I'm not going to risk it |

That’s not provocation it’s a sensible reply. Two of the most respected people on here, Brian and Andy are giving you the benefit of their years of experience and you’re sitting asking for proof of their statements when nearly everyone agrees that the service schedule should be adhered to. Others have stated that rubber deteriorates over time and still you argue your belts are fine so why not refit the covers and run it to destruction |

Is a degree in Materials Engineering (which did specifically look at timing belts as a case study) qualification enough to have an opinion Simon?
For what it's worth I sit firmly within the "replacement at recommended mileage/time interval" camp. |

So, are you leaving the belts alone then, seeing as they're ok ? How many more miles do you think they'll do?

Apparently oil, like belts, does not degrade over time either!

Having not met either Simon or Brian (no axe to grind) and being electrically trained (now multi-skilled)I was taught that when you could see the teeth marks on the opposite side (never heard of zebra marking before) that it was time to change the belt! Simon change your belt sharpish.
Neil p.s. I respect the pair of you and like reading all your posts, just try not to get too personal with each other. |

Replying to sensible points made
No, I'm changing them according to MG Rover's mileage recommendation.
