Default Courtesy Lamp Fitting

I went to change the bulb in the front courtesy lamp cluster, but the holder came out with the bulb still in it. Not having ever needed to replace a bulb in this fitting before, I don't know whether this should happen? Is there a knack to refit the holder back into the housing so that the 12V contacts are made OK? Seems a silly question I know, but I cannot seem to re-locate it. ED (March 2005 R75 CDTi.)

Many thanks for all this detail. I can now see how the bulb holders make contact with the supply bus on the roof side of the lamp cluster chassis. ED
