I shall await your findings with interest, I do find that road noise is more intrusive that the engine noise, I wonder if fitting 15" wheels replacing the 16" on would make a difference

I have 15 inch steel wheels on my car - very uncool, but give a smoother quieter ride than the previous 16 inch alloys.

I find that you can hear the "Tap Tap" of the diesel when cold but when warm it is much reduced. I can also confirm that using Shell V-Power fuel allows the engine to run quieter.

Road noise on my ZTT is very low. Considering the tyres 225/45/18 I am pleased with this.

My 2005 diesel is very very noisy, engine and road noise. Wind noise is good.

Does anyone know what was changed/removed. Mine has hardly any bitumen pads on the floor under the carpet.

I think the thickness/quality of the cabin and boot carpets was reduced, with less soundproofing material as part of Project Drive. The soundproofing under the rear parcel shelf was also removed. I think there may also have been inferior quality door cards fitted later on - one member on here reported much reduced road noise when he added sound insulation inside the doors.

the noise of the engine is pretty well damped I think , certainly on my 2003 CDT it was. road noise is less well damped than the earlier pre project drive cars as they cut down on the thickness of carpet and underlay, and the amount of dampening used.

I reckon the best wins are putting things like dynamat inside the car door skins if you want to reduce exterior noise transmission into the car - the resonance effects from the outside are reduced by this only. It will make a car eerily quiet in my experience, as my CDT had 4mm silent coat sound deadening material put in and the whole thing runs quieter than Red October.

Tony

Did you cover the whole of the inside of the doors with the 4mm silentcoat, or just add dampener pads to the middle of the outer door skin/panel ?
Thanks for a bit more detail
