having got this far it is time to brave the engine bay.
now normally I'm a firm believer in keeping it shut and leaving it to more mechanically minded people - after all, if you were supposed to open it , there would be another handle on it. But I have been inspired by user 129c to get busy in the engine compartment. So begins a mini project - project Engine Bay. Firstly, I washed it out with a bucket and sponge gently and applied gunk liberally: Brushed it out good and proper, rinsed and took it for a drive to dry out. I was daunted by the task at this point and if I'm honest I went looking for a steam cleaner place, but when i found he wanted 15 quid, i suddenly got the bit between my teeth again. So, back again, and onto the varying bits of paintwork that never see the light of day with ultimate compound. Sadly my engine bay has been a working mans engine bay, the paint is horrifically scratched, and the slam panel is quite pitted and scarred with surface corrosion. But there is still scope for improvement: moving along that side of the engine bay, the paintwork cleans up but is damaged badly in many places: The shuts at the side of the bonnet have come up better : as has the side to the bonnet, oft neglected: So the quick wins: and now of course, the plastics in the engine bay. Well back to black is good enough for me - i used black in a flash (matt) by turtlewax in the end, cheap and cheerful. battery box and fuse box, plus air cleaner: expansion tank: Scuttle Panels: Engine cover, plus new V6 badge courtesy of Paul 129c again! upper inlet manifold: All in all, not a bad start to the work. I have started using autosol on the aircon pipes too, but more about that tomorrow.

The bonnet is now finished, I've done as much as I feel is appropriate considering the state of the metalwork in there:
I've polished all the underside of the bonnet and the little bits that don't get much attention regularly too: This is done. So then my Dad puts an electric toothbrush in my hand, knowing full well I have a tube of autosol and a dirty alternator. Sigh...... Maybe this is not the end?

a total disaster of a day.
The one thing I thought this car would be easier with was getting powerfolds working. I am still stuck with 1 working powerfold, and no passenger powerfold on my gold car, and still trying to fix that. I've had disappointments on getting hold of a working one, and I'm still in the process of trying to get fixed a broken one that may or may not solve my problem. It is soul destroying. This car however has two powerfold mirrors attached now, so i ordered up the looms i needed confident that I could get the drivers side working fairly quickly. Only i couldn't. the loom appears defective unless i'm horribly mistaken as there is no continuity between the switch wires and the socket that goes in the powerfold mirror on the drivers side. So when I pulled it off to test further indoors, it wouldn't come out until it broke off inside the plug. So that's it. This car will never have powerfolds now, as the connector required in the plug is now blocked by the remains of the broken one, and I'm unable to dig it out with a needle or anything. I've asked a question in the forum in general if anyone can help as I've reached the end of my tether with it all now. If I can't get the fragments of the crimp connector out, I'm done for good with this dream, as I can't see a way forward. Even with a new loom that works it is now blocked from being inserted on the plug, which is a part of my car. Someone up there really doesn't want me to have powerfolds on any of my cars. I think this time I've had more than i can take and I really want to just give up. This it totally beyond me.

many thanks to Ricksta who today went out of his way to drop off a new connector for the door switchpack. i believe it may yet save the day on this. I will be experimenting further this week and next.
Thanks Rick ,sorry I wasn't in myself when you dropped by. Additional updates - Gear selector display mechanism had the clear plastic window on top missing - I've now had a swap from my Gold CDT to get this right. Carpet mat clips added to secure carpet. I used VW/skoda style ones, since the mg rover ones I had were clearly quite similar. These ones are in fact slightly better having a broader base, and considerably easier to locate and consequently are a lot cheaper too. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221801366407

additional - I forgot to mention I wired each powerfold up to the battery direct to test them out - they both folded fine. So it is only a matter of time before i get these working, since I have attached to the car working chrome bullet powerfold mirrors, and the switchpack tests out fine in my CDT which has a working drivers powerfold mirror. All parts check out, I just need to get the wiring right. I did not expect the disasters with the drivers door, but I think that will soon be behind me. I will not rest until I have powerfolds in at least one of my cars!
