Default ABS problem.

Any advice pre - garage visit is welcome.

Brakes make grinding noise and feel rough on the pedal until the ABS warning light comes on, at which point they feel fine again.

I've been told that it could be an ABS ring inside the wheel bearing that needs replaced?

could be as simple as the sensor. i would guess you won't know until that is elimnated. i have one car that had that very same symptom, until the speedo stopped working and the abs light came on permanently. brake were fine after that mind you.

i also have a 2nd car now with a speedo that is temperamental for some reason.

so it looks like its all turning out fine again

If you are handy with a multimeter you can diagnose the vast majority of ABS faults without the help of a garage.

Plenty of info on the site if you do a search - this is a recent thread:

In my experience, this is usually a sensor.
I get asked every day to diagnose ABS issues via email, and after pointing people towards the guides it's usually a sensor.

We have front and rear sensors here:
Front ABS Sensor - 75/ZT
Rear ABS Sensor - 75/ZT

They seem OK now... But I replaced both front bearings and three ABS sensors before it was sorted. The mechanic was really frustrated!

There remains a bit of roughness when I push the brake pedal beyond halfway, so I'm not counting any fowl just yet...

If it still has the same problem but to a much lesser degree, this is usually because one sensor won't be sat *quite* deep enough in its mounting hole - usually due to a bit of surface corrosion where it's bolted down.

First 75 had this issue.

Cheers for that... Is it a case of cleaning up the corroded area?
