This is a good thing to have btw, but not bothering with mine.
As far as cleanliness, as long as there is no corrosion on the filler neck or associated attachments your fairly safe. I reckon Tony left this for us to comment on, it;s about as clean as his mind really !

Don't panic Tony, all will work out good in the end.
Tony thinks I am sick in the swede for T cutting the inside of my filler cap!!!

Not a bad idea to add a looped cap - I remember my Dad telling me stories about lost caps in the past and having to find emergency replacements.

An interesting bit of trivia on the loop - car type approval regulations changed back around 2000, meaning that all future petrol engined cars had to have either a tethered cap or a key-locking one where the key couldn't be removed with the cap in the unlocked state. MGR introduced the tethered cap from the very beginning of Longbridge production in October 2000, so introduced the change in the break in production between Cowley and Longbridge between July-October.

So if you have a Cowley built car, or a diesel, your car would have been built with no tether, and instead had a rubber buffer in the slot that the tether clips into.

(Useless information broadcast over)

Yes it is odd, I had reason to look into it once, can't remember why now.

Certainly a good idea to have one I think, having said that I have fitted a locking cap and my car key is separate, so I could end up leaving it behind but I would find out when I get home and can't open the house as the key is with the door keys!
