Inner tie rods

Ihave read that the original inner tie rod when it was fitted, was spot welded to the steering rack.Therefore they will be hard to remove. True or false? I have ordered two rods from DMGRS, and don't want to end up with a more awkward job than is needed.I imagine that it can not be that hard a job to break the spot weld, but I am a bit trepidacious in case I end up with a bigger job than nescesary .

You are correct the original is spot welded, on one of mine had to grind some flats on the original to allow me to get some purchase with a large spanner to loosen it. This particular one had a large weld and took a tiny bit of the rack off with it, another I did came off easy.

Flats grinded as I could get no purchase.

Use a Stillson pipe wrench - they normally come off OK

Don't know about the welding, but inner tie rod removal tools aren't *that* expensive and make it quite easy.

2 years since the last message on this thread !

I'm planing on changing mine, but could undoing the rod that is welded to the rack damage the rack ? bend it etc ?
Would it be a good idea to support the rack part to stock it twisting ?

It’s not as bad as it sounds, I have changed a couple of these and they came out easily, I have two more to do in the next couple of weeks too!
