Default ZT 190 Brake upgrade parts?

Hi guys,

The standard brakes on the CDTi are literally nothing short of dangerous.

Slowing down from 125mph+ leaves you basically no brakes left, they are awful.

I know that the brakes are all BMW calipers, however, what about the carriers?

Can one buy new/refurbed BMW calipers and carriers and they fit the ZT ok?

I'd like to upgrade the brakes all round to 190 brakes, and it seems that its about the same cost to buy "new" as it is to source a full set of used, corroded jobs, and get them fully refurbed at BiggRed.

Anyone got any hot tips on how I can get this done easily? None of the carriers of course are available via Xpart.

Sorry if this is a stupid question and all the corresponding BMW part numbers are listed on the forums, if they are I couldnt find them!

Danke

Well if you're driving at 125+ which I doubt, what do you expect?

I expect brakes that work.

What is there to doubt?

I think the carriers are MGR, not BMW. Good luck finding them on your own.

I'm not sure I'd agree the standard brakes are "dangerous" - bear in mind the E46 320d was more powerful and had the same breaks, a car designed in a country with autobahns.

Refurbing calipers is always expensive (at least if youi need new pistons), especially at BiggRed. If you don't need a fancy paint finish you'd be much better DIY'ing. However, the caliper aren't known for going wrong so you might not need to do anything, esp if the seals etc look ok.

Probably the fact that a ZT CDTi will struggle to do 125, let alone 125+. Mine topped out at 128 and was far from standard.

A diesel, at 125 MPH... must be down hill with a tail wind...

I had 190 callipers front and rear fitted to one of mine with drilled and slotted discs and green stuff pads...
It was nothing short of brilliant...

that was on MGR brackets..

I stripped and derusted the callipers and other parts in a electrolytic bath before repainting and fitting new pots and all rubberwork, new pins and retaining clips.
I also used braided hoses. I did not go for the 190 master cylinder though, I did have one to hand but not the larger servo, so it never got fitted.

Oh ***k.

So the master technically speaking should be done too? I was of the understanding that they were the same, never knew they were different.

and yes, 128 is 125mph+ so this is entirely accurate. Never been able to get it anywhere past this though, even after miles of sustained acceleration.

150 would be more like it, but I guess I need to make do with what it can do.

Would be great if the BMW calipers AND carriers were the same front and back, but struggling to find a definitve answer, of course I am aware the discs are not compatible, and this is fine.

Std brakes just dont slow the car fast enough from higher speeds, and in addition, its a one shot go, repeated slow downs from higher speeds leaves you guessing whether you will have decent braking or not. I'd rather be safe.

So even on the Autobahn at 125+ using 'Dangerous' 'One shot brakes' 'leaving you guessing whether you will have decent brakes or not' you continue to do it

They definitely aren't. Bear in mind that the rears are vented (vs the standard solid ones) but considering how little the rears do - is it worth upgrading?

I think the rear calipers might even be the same, and it's just the carriers that are different - but you'd need to check an EPC.

Then you need better fluid and better discs / pads.

Hypocritical of course, because I upgraded mine too!
