Default So you think you can solder?

Picked this up from a market yesterday. Called a "Self Heating Soldiering Iron". Probably made by Merx at Sevenoaks before 1940. You added a tin capsule of calcium carbide into the pan, pierced the tin, lit it - ran I should think as it gives off acetylene gas. It burns at nearly 4000ºF and apparently took about a minute to heat the massive copper tip. Could be used for joining boiler plate, maybe not for under-seat airbag connectors.

Intrigued, to say the least.

About to do some research.

Research done.

Half a dozen entries found, with photos.

Available with different soldering heads, but all seem to be the same handle & heating design.

At least one claims to have Merx of Sevenoaks on the back.

Still intrigued, about the company; surely they made other things as well. will try and see what the local historians come up with.

Regards

Mike

Mine doesn't have any name but has a number "303". You may come across a patent for a similar item intriguingly lodged by Mox in Germany dated 1930. The Science Museum has one too. The mystery deepens.

Search Blowlamp News - yes there are other fanatics out there too. There's a society for everything.

If you can't master it for soldering I guess you could always light your fags off it.----
