As my offer to members is now closed, these are the best suppliers for anyone wishing to buy one. I have offered something that I feel is important. This is that for the 4 people who have asked for one, I will check each meter against a known reference (A Fluke DVM) on all the ranges so that when they receive their units they can be confident that the units are not in some way faulty and the readings are accurate. I will then post onwards the cost of which is included in the total £18 and has been estimated by me at around £4 to £5. I thought I would clarify in case anyone feels that this is my way of funding a life of leisure on a Sunseeker. P.S. I will of course happily publish a full profit and loss account for the benefit of the those who are not amongst the participating four members! Last edited by MSS; 24th September 2021 at 12:45.. |

I have this meter, and I must say it's been fantastic in use.
I got it from CPC a while ago, no idea if the measurements are accurate (not quite got the pockets for a Fluke!) but they seem spot on and it helped me find a dead MOSFET in my home cinema amplifier. Well done MSS, absolutely worth £18 knowing it's definitely accurate and you can't even get them from CPC posted for that (their handling charge would make it nearly £20 as pointed out). Auto-ranging is a brilliant feature, and makes diagnosis of things much easier. The rail voltage for this particular MOSFET was 24v (from memory, a long time ago now) and with one shorted to ground it automatically dropped to millivolts which was handy. Just to add the above is my personal experience, I'm sure down at HQ Scott has a fancy Fluke for his ZT260

The meters are here. They would have been here on Monday had we not been missing on UPS's maps!
I have opened up my spare to inspect and it is good. I will post up some pictures this evening. |

Photographs and initial testing
The third and fourth photographs below show the meter in question. The first and second photographs show a cheap £7 meter. The differences should be obvious.
Observations on the Duratool DVM 1. The leads are of a much better quality than the cheapo meters - they are thick and flexible, almost silicon like. They should be long lasting. 2. The DVM has fuse protection for low and high current ranges - 250mA and 10A respectively. They are of quick-blow type as they should be. 3. There are also two overload protection PTC components which is good. 4. All the soldering is clean (on opposite side to the components). 5. The silicon like orange outer casing should give very good protection if dropped. Measurements taken on the opened-up unit that I am going to keep. Quantity <>Fluke Reading <>Duratool Reading DC Volts<> 12.00V<> 12.01V DC Volts<> 5.00V<> 5.01V Resistance (330ohm +/-5%)<> 319ohm<> 320ohm Resistance (3.3ohm+/-10%)<> 3.2ohm<> 3.4ohm DC Current<> 30mA<> 31mA DC Current<> 1.00A<> 1.05A Mains AC voltage<> 242V<> 243V If all the other units are as good, these will be an excellent addition to anyone's toolkit. I will order some spare fast acting fuses of both values and the correct physical size. I'll include 2 with each DVM as usually these things are blown due to mis-connection when the meter is needed for measurements and getting a replacement fuse of the correct type can take days by post. Good afternoon gents,
The meters have been tested and are ready to be posted. I shall take them to the PO tomorrow or Wednesday provided you PM me your addresses. David - got yours. Thank you. Your will receive the meter, leads, battery already fitted and the little booklet in the original box. Everything that came. I also ordered some spare 10A and 250mA fuses and each meter will come with 2 of each in a little sellotaped paper 'envelope'. These are of the same type originally fitted to the meters - 20mmx5mm fast-blow ceramic cartridge. Total cost with the fuses and postage came out at £17.15 each. |
