Hi Phil.
If possible get a friend/partner to help both wear a pair of rubber gloves one hold the canister the other the fuel filter top and then turn it, you can do it your self but much easier if stuck if two have a go at it believe me the rubber gloves will help with the grip good luck Arctic

PS to late I see you have solved it

Worth noting that some aftermarket filters won't tighten up properly in the clamp. Try and get unipart or an oem standard one. I think the one I had that didn't tighten properly was a FRAM one some years ago.

To help get the filter off.
When you undo the clamp that holds the filter . instead of taking it out lift the filter up till the plastic fuel pipe holder is higher the battery then do the clamp back up,this will hold it like a vice loosen the top the just undo the clamp again and remove.

Any recommendations as to what make/model of fuel filters work best when replacing?

Thanks Arctic.

Is there a recommended period of time that these filters last? Pretty sure mine's an original which after 10 years and 112k I'm thinking I should probably change. I probably should have done it at the same time as I change the underbonnet fuel pump, but in the rush to get that changed forgot all about it.

Hi Ade for the cost I change mine every 12 months but I am a bit OTT in the book it states 60 000 or every 4 years, but would certainly change it after two years, and in your case most certainly

Lol, next job then!
Might be wrong - the previous owner seemed to do everything by the book, but it's not been done since I've had, that much I'm sure about.
It seems the OEM one is made in Austria, which makes me think it would have been supplied by Mahle. So, will probably go for the Britpart Mahle one. Thanks
