This has me beaten. The heaters in the mirrors are not working. I have now broken the passenger door mirror glass and removed it. Only the glass has been removed. I have included a photo as I can not for the life of me work out what to do. Exactly what am I trying to replace? Is it just the glass that gets replaced or is there a backing plate as well as the glass that gets replaced? From the photo there is a black rectangle in the middle with what looks like a grey surround, it is in fact black. How does these come apart and does the grey surround also get replaced?
At last I have it apart. This is for right hand drive cars. For left had I guess use instructions for passenger side on the drivers side and drivers side instructions for passenger side Tilt the mirror so up/down it is in the middle, IE horizontal. Turn the mirror glass fully in towards the car. If doing passenger side, at the right hand side of the mirror glass wedge a knife between the mirror housing and the mirror. Using the knife push firmly the mirror horizontally towards the near side kerb, at the same time pull the left side of the mirror away from the housing. the left edge should then come away. I have not done drivers side but I assume it is Tilt the mirror so up/down it is in the middle, IE horizontal. Turn the mirror glass fully in towards the car If doing drivers side, at the right hand side of the mirror glass wedge a knife between the mirror housing and the mirror. Using the knife push firmly the mirror horizontally towards the off side kerb, at the same time pull the right side of the mirror away from the housing. the right edge should then come away. hogweed the glass and "grey" part are all one. the "grey" part fixes to the black rectangle.
pictures coming right up This is the passenger mirror I got off of ebay that arrived yesterday. I'm not going to say how long it took me to remove my mirror the first time on the passenger side but when I did the drivers side, I don't know, 10 seconds picture 1. Where the tape is, make sure you have adjust this side of the mirror as far back into the housing as it will go. don't force it. Picture2 Insert a screw driver between the mirror and housing and push the mirror to the left in the direction of the arrow. it will only move about 1/8th to 1/4th of an inch Picture3 whilst still keeping the mirror pushed in the direction of the arrow, insert something thin between the mirror and casing where my thumb is. Give this a little lever to push the mirror on this side away for the housing. The left side should now me free. Remove your screwdrivers. Hold the mirror and push it back in the opposite direction to the arrow, about 1/8th to 1/4 of an inch. This should now free the other side of the mirror and you can pull it away. Don't forget to remove the wires at this point that attach to the heating element You should have in your hand the mirror and a black plastic backing picture 4, this is the backing plate and is part of the mirror, you wont be able to see this side as the mirror is stuck to it. the 3 arrows show step downs in the backing plate, these fit under the black rectangle in picture 6 picture 5 the two arrows show what fits into the step downs in the backing plate. the thin bit of plastic the runs top to bottom by the right arrow only just fits the right hand step down. The whole edge of the black rectangle by the left arrow fits into the drop down of the backing plate. macafee2 Last edited by Dragrad; 5th February 2017 at 23:45.. Putting the new one in was also a laugh, not least because I didn't want to break it... eventually I figured out you had to hook the end with the tab (circled in red) in first, then lever it out from that end towards the outside of the car, while pushing the other end towards the front of the car. You kind of have to stretch it over the outside end, then it snaps back into place. Not the best design I've ever seen...

Thanks to all of you going to the effort of uploading this sort of information. Doing this tomorrow as I just bought a Tourer with all sorts of bells and whistles .... just most of them don't work at the minute.

Came apart exactly as you explained, not quite certain how to replace into latches ,don't wish to break it by stupid movement???Could you give some advice?
Mine is Drivers side?
