Default Front anti-roll bar question

Can the front anti-roll bar be removed without a major ordeal?

Discounting the drop link nuts which are easily getattable but will benefit from a couple of days of Plusgas, the other four clamp bolts are fairly easy to get to, the car up on ramps or safe on axle stands etc.


There are three problems, one is that the bolts drop down from above, with a bit of restricted space due to the steering rack but not too bad, the second is rust, but several doses of your favourite rust remover should help, the third is that they are far too long than they need to be and winding the rusted bolt seems to take ages, other than that not too bad.

Thanks! I had a feeling it would be a nightmare, requiring dropping the subframe or something.

The drop links are only about three years old so not too bad, the other bolts may be a bit interesting lol.

Now I'm going to look for ZT roll bars!

There is the potential for that to happen, on the75 tourer I was given, whilst changing rear upper wishbones the inner captive nut on one let go so the subframe had to come down so I could work on it.


I hadn't intended to remove the roll bar but did so to stop fighting with it whilst moving the subframe about to remove the bolt and re-weld the captive nut, I did both whilst I was at it, two bolts came out reasonably easy, one only just, the fourth needed a large nut welding on it to shift it, the heat helped, so it could be an unknown quantity.


I'm now working on the front, the bushes are OK, so it's stopping where it is.

Hello Mike,

After releasing the anti-roll bar saddle clamps, have you thought how you're going to extract the anti-roll bar given that it has large loops on each end? RAVE lists removing the exhaust system, heat shields, steering rack bolts, subframe braces and, as you guessed, lowering the subframe.

I was contemplating fitting ZT suspension to my 75, starting with the thicker anti roll bars

Ah, I see. It would be a lot easier to swap your Rover for a ZT so that you get the full experience. You'd need to change the lower suspension arm rear bushes as well and having just done that myself I can tell you that it's a challenge and a half.

Yes, I'm sure it would be easier but now own a fully sorted 75, with quite a lot of new parts, including the bushes you have just mentioned. As it's a really nice example with very very little rust on anything underneath I'm a bit reluctant to start again. Perhaps I need to keep this and buy a ZT as well.
