Gas fire suprise
Sat looking at our live inset gas fire last night listening to the gas hissing , I had it on full flame . Being curious I timed the gas meter until it used 1 cub meter, it was 37 minutes . So off with the fire and on with the boiler ,
thermostat up full so it ran continously . It used 1 cub meter in 59 minutes and heated 8 radiators in a 2 bed bungalow ! The gas fire warmed one room with most heat going up the flue , So a big thumbs down for efficiency ! |

Even the best open flue gas fire will only achieve around 85% efficiency, some open flame living flame fires "boast" 50% efficiency. with many a lot less. when you get to the basket type then you really are watching your money go up in smoke.
The current condensing boilers are far more efficient. By way as an advert for Electricity, all electric fires are 100% efficient ( doesn't mean they are cheaper to run though )

Gas fires mainly raise an upwards convection current and require the flue to increase the draft upwards (and up the flue - away from you and the house).
Electric fires also create a radiated heat and toasty feet. And with a lot of our gas coming from Russia....

My coal effect fire is terrible. Did a similar test last year in cold weather. Put gas fire on full for 4 hrs. Turned it off then Put heating on 21c for th same amount of time. Gas fire used fractionally more than central heating. Yes it used 12 kw to heat th water in th first 14 mins but then th thermostate keeps an eye on it. It messures th trend of going up or down, which then controls th house perfectly. Saved £417 last year buy not using th fire.
